Surviving College? Try Thriving Instead

March 13, 2026

Picture this: you’re sleep deprived, shaking from the energy drink that you just chugged, running to your 8 a.m. lecture on an empty stomach and in your clothes from yesterday. This was a pretty accurate picture of me for my first semester of college. College was a huge adjustment for me. That first semester felt like a sprint where I was never able to take a break.

Don't worry though, I learned from my mistakes and picked up a few tips and tricks to make college much more fun which is what it should be! I’m currently a sophomore at Boston University and having the time of my life. If you are an incoming freshman and looking for advice, go no further because I would love to let you know what I’ve learned.

Social Connections Are Important In College

My number one piece of advice is to actively try to find friends. It can be tempting to stay safely nestled in your dorm but, in college, it’s truly the people that make the place. Ask any college student and they will tell you that the best way to make friends is to join student organizations. I am in a sorority on campus and have met some of my best friends through it.

Also, don’t be afraid to talk to people in class. Having friends in your classes makes going to lecture more fun and it is always nice to have someone to turn to for help if you are struggling with course material. It can be as easy as inviting someone to lunch in the dining hall. The majority of my friendships here started off with dining hall runs or study sessions.

Fuel Yourself For Your Day

My second piece of advice is to fuel yourself! You probably bought a dining plan so put that money to good use. There can be a toxic culture of skipping meals in college but I am a strong believer that you can always make time for a meal. If you really are in a rush, pack snacks that you know will tide you over to your next meal. My favorite snacks are protein bars and bananas. My study sessions are so much more productive when my body is fueled.

P.S. this isn’t about fuel but I always have a fun drink with me when I'm studying. I’m obsessed with trying the different coffee spots around campus. Hot take, I love banana flavored coffee.

Plan Ahead If Possible

My third piece of advice is to be prepared for the future. One big thing about college that scared me was the unpredictability of what could happen. Obviously, you can’t plan for everything, but there are many things that can be in your control. I mapped out the classes that I want to take for the next couple of semesters so that I have a better idea of what I need to focus on. This helped me ensure that I will have space in my schedule to study abroad.

Catch me in Dublin next spring! I know of so many upperclassmen that are scrambling to take all of their required classes because they didn’t plan ahead. Another great way to be prepared is to talk to your parents about insurance options. My parents and I decided to get GradGuard Renters and Tuition Insurance policies so that I can be better prepared for the risks of college life. I am planning on moving off campus next semester and my GradGuard Renters Insurance policy is giving me peace of mind during this switch.

Prioritize Physical Activity

My fourth piece of advice is to move your body. I joined the women’s rugby team and it has been such a good outlet for whenever I am stressed. I also love to go on walks/runs around Boston. It has helped me to discover parts of the city that I would have never thought to visit and it gives me a good reason to take a break from studying. Inviting friends to a work out can be a great bonding opportunity!

Wake Up Early

My final piece of advice is going to be one that you might want to fight against but, I swear, it changed everything for me! I try to wake up early most mornings in college. I am able to get so much more done during my day if I get up at a decent time. There is truly no better feeling than getting your work done for the day before lunch and having the rest of the day to do whatever you want stress free. Plus, you might get to see some pretty sunrises!

I hope that these five tips will help you because they definitely helped me. College is truly what you make of it and doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Have a great first year and don’t forget to have fun!
